看来两位老师的解答有点冲突。不过，根据1983年1月1版章振邦《新编英语语法》（下册）P.515上的说明，in the early morning of May 10的表达应该是正确的。摘录如下：
表示某天的朝夕用on，如on Sunday morning, on the afternoon of October the first⑬，on the following evnening。如果在morning / evening之前有形容词也须用on，如on a fine morning, on a quiet evening等。
⑬ 如果某月某日在上（下）午之前有late, early等修饰语，介词仍用in，如in the late afternoon of 1st Octoboer。
▲夸克《英语语法大全》（P.943）也有同样的说明：
on Monday morning, on Saturday afternoon, on the following evening等表明，on加了一个补足语后有一种特殊用法，即指一天的一部分，而不是指全天。这种用法也扩展到其他一些情况，其中的一段时间是指实际提到的某一天的一部分：on the morning of 1 June等, 但在early morning, late afternoo这样的短语之前，通常用in，如in the late afternoon.

按照英语的通常习惯，表示一般意义的“在上午”，要用 in the morning。
要表示特指的某天上午，则要用 on the morning of... 如：
He was born on the morning of May 10. 他是5月10日上午出生的。
但根据英语习惯，当 morning 前面有 early, late 修饰时，即使是特指的某天上午，也要连用介词 in，而不是 on 。如：
He was born in the early morning of May 10. 他是5月10日清晨出生的。
He was born early in the morning of May 10. 他是5月10日清晨出生的。
注：afternoon, evening 的用法也是如此。

这是错误的表达。“早上；凌晨” 都是5月10日这一天的某时，在某一天或是某天的某个时刻，用 on 而不用 in。
问题是：你这个词组来自哪里？

2008年7月第1版《外研社英汉多功能词典》指出（p.1363）:
指特定日子或星期几的早晨时，介词用 on ：I'll meet her on Sunday morning. 我将在星期日早晨和她见面。
但与 early, late 连用时，介词要用 in：He arrived at Rome in the early morning of April (the) first. 他于4月1日清晨抵达罗马。

On Monday morning, on Saturday afternoon, on the following evening, etc
illustrate an exceptional use of on with a complement referring to a PART of a
day, rather than a WHOLE day. This use also extends to other cases where the
time segment is a part of a day which is actually mentioned: on the morning
of 1 June, etc. But with phrases like early morning and late afternoon it is
normal to use in: in the late afternoon.
这里夸克的话里，划线的部分不知何意，也许是指与On Sunday， (On) that day之类相比较吧。否则，这不是废话么？管它On什么morning，难道还能指一整天？
关于的on/in, 夸克的意思是，
on the morning of 1 June （OK）
in the late afternoon. （normal）
但这里夸克没有进一步讲下去。
标红线的部分是关键点：which is actually mentioned. 换句话说，仅仅说 on the morning （of l June），没有这个打括号的部分，仅用on the morning，意思就很可能没讲完整。
1. He got up in the early morning.
2. He got up on the early morning.
如果没头没脑的突然来这么一句，1意思完整没问题，2可能会被听成没讲完，人家还会期待你讲下去。就是对句子1，人们对后面的of期待值不会太大，而对2，人们期待有个of之类的结构。 但即使加上of 结构，on the early morning of ... 很多人还是会认为不正确。
