But it tries to avoid territorial fights, being guided by the distinctive body smell of other tigers. 我觉得这句的意思是：但它在其他老虎特有体味的影响下，会尽量避免发生领土战争。也就是说当一只老虎嗅到其他老虎的味道时，尽量不去侵犯它的地盘。这里的being guided……是现在分词被动语态作状语(这里可理解为时间状语)，用现在分词被动语态表示这个动作与主句的谓语动词的动作具有时间上的同时性。
