at the edge of

这两个词组的区别，说到底是两个介词的区别。

由于on 表示“接触”，所以，on the edge of 的意思是“恰恰在边缘上”。记得有部电影，一辆轿车在大桥上奔跑，不料这座大桥被敌方炸断。然而该轿车就在这断桥处停下了，一半车身悬在空中，一半车身在桥上。这里用 on the edge of the broken bridge，再恰切不过了。

如果轿车发现了断桥，并及时在断桥处附近停了下来，这时就用 at the edge of the broken bridge。因为介词at 表示“在附近；在旁边”之意。又如：我们说 He is studying his lessons at the desk（坐在桌边学习）. 不说 He is studying his lessons on the desk. （坐在桌子上学习？）

再举两个例子。比如说，有人在山顶建了一所房子。那么，用英语该怎么说呢？请看以下两个句子：

The house stands on the top of the mountain. （可能性不大）

The house stands at the top of the mountain.（完全可以）

at the edge of表“大概范围”，on the edge of表“具体范围”，通常情况下区分并不明显，但有时候在含义上给人的感觉有一定的差异。比较：

He put the glass at the edge of the table.他把玻璃杯放在桌边。（安全）

He put the glass on the edge of the table.他把玻璃杯放在桌边。（玄乎）

因此，on the edge of可引申出“快要......；濒临......”的意义：

He is on the edge of bankruptcy他濒临破产。

Worn out, he was on the edge of sleep他累极了，快要睡着了。
