在一本作文书上看到的句子,意思是“尽管艺术如此重要,但是很多人认为公共设施更加应该获得政府的资助。”,这篇文章主要是在讨论政府是否应该投资艺术。
不太明白句中的would表达的是什么意思。我查了一下词典,有两个比较接近的。
1. used as the past form of will when reporting what somebody has said or thought。我觉得这个句子没有“过去认为”的意思,所以不是这个解释。
2. used for talking about the result of an event that you imagine。这个更接近一点。但是我觉得“很多人认为公共设施更应该获得政府资助”应该是一个“事实”,而不是作者的想象。
如果不用would,这句话可以怎么表达呢?
情态动词would,
除了表示纯粹的过去将来时用法之外,或多或少都可以往虚拟语气上套。
尽管有的时候,可能不是太容易补上would所在的主句之外的、隐含的if条件句那一截。

为简便,你这种题里的would,通常都说成是“表示推测”,很少人会去考虑虚拟语气这一层; 因为了虚拟语气,自然也就显得比较婉转

可用may等. (不能用will)
如果不用情态动词,而句子结构又不做较大的调整,则很难保证与原句意思一致:
比如说,many people,however,are likely to argue that ...
原句是人们可能会,也可能不会;这句是很可能会(基本上会)...
加个however也减少不了几分的肯定性
