我提一点与蒋老师稍不同的看法，仅供网友参考：

The majority of和a majority of几乎没有什么差异，都表示超过半数以上，等于most或most of，the majority of用得最多，常指“人”；a majority of既指“人”也指“事物”，同样可以表示某个特定范围中的大多数。把全部视为整体时视为单数，当作许多个体时视为复数。例如：

The majority of students were [was] indifferent to the political meeting.大多数的学生对政治集会漠不关心。《英汉多功能词典》

A majority of those polled were worried about inflation.接受民意测验中的大多数人担心通货膨胀。（iCIBA来自词典例句）

At no time did a majority of Czechoslavakia's citizens support the country's break-up.大多数捷克斯洛伐克公民一直反对国家分裂。《柯林斯高阶英汉双解词典》

请比较大学四级考试2013年6月听力原文中的两句话：

The majority of them find it interesting.大多数人都觉得很有趣。

A majority of them are young couples.其中大多数是年轻夫妇。

▲不过，当指得最高票者的得票数超过其他候选人时只能用a majority of。例如：

He was elected by a large majority [ by a majority of 3240 ]. 他以大多数票[超过对方3240票]当选。《现代英汉综合大辞典》

The coalition won a majority of the vote but failed to win enough of the key marginals.该政党联盟赢得了绝大多数选票，但却未赢得足够多的关键边缘席位的选票。《柯林斯高阶英汉双解词典》
