hard 是个多义词，不能单独用来描写人，需要辅以恰当的词语（例如：介词短语，hard 合成词，添加身份名词，与其他词并列，不定式，等等）意思才变得清晰。例如：

He is hard at work.  

他工作很努力。

He is hard-working.

他工作勤奋。

He is a hard worker.

他是一个辛勤的工作者。

He is hard towards his children.  

他对自己的孩子严厉。

He is hard on the girl.  

他对这女孩很苛刻。

He is hard on/by seventy.  

他快到七十岁了。

He is hard of hearing.  

他耳朵有点聋.

He is hard of access. 

他不容易接近。

He is hard and cruel.

他冷酷无情。

He is hard up recently.

他最近手头拮据。

He is hard to deal with.  

他这个人难以应付。
