我的理解是不是there is surprising的句型。

就如同there is no knowing/telling这样的句型。我的理解对吗?

surprising 是形容词作定语，修饰名词lack，说明 “缺乏” 到了令人惊讶的程度。

我换换说法，比较一下：

There is no lack of understanding of what science is. （不缺乏...）

There is surprising lack of understanding of what science is. （令人惊讶的缺乏...）
