如何理解had just as soon

'd just soon 是个“习语”,它有两种结构:

1. 'd just soon + 动词原形

2. 'd just soon + that 从句

这两种表达中的缩略形式 'd,到底是指had 还是would,一直有争论。不过从语法角度看,理解为would 才是合理的,因为后面是动词原形。

这跟'd rather + 动词原形 和 'd better + 动词原形,应该属于一种类型。我倾向于都是would,而不是had,因为语法使然。习惯用法和语法相比,我更敬畏语法。原本应为would,由于口语使用了缩略形式'd,久而久之,有人认为可能是had,因此就有了had better do 的说法,其实是错误的,应为would better do。

例句:

I would just as soon stay home and watch television.  

我宁愿在家看电视。
