刘老师的解答有个笔误，“英语习惯上不说I don’t think so.”这句话原本是想写成“英语习惯上不说I don’t hope so.”的。正因为刘老师的误写，才使得我认为有必要对这个问题啰嗦几句：

在英语中，有些动词常用否定转移形式。如：think, guess, believe, expect, suppose等，但它们仍然可以用非否定转移形式。无论用否定转移还是非否定转移，它们所表达的意义是相同的。如：

－ Will they go outing this Sunday? 他们这个星期天要去郊游吗？

－ I don’t think so. (= I think not.) 我想他们不会去的。

注意：“so”代表肯定式的宾语从句，“not”代表否定式的宾语从句。即：

I don’t think so. = I don’t think that they will go outing this Sunday.（否定转移）

I think not. = I think that they will not go outing this Sunday.（非否定转移）

但是，hope是一个不能用于否定转移的动词，它的两种否定形式在意义上是不同的。如：

－Will he come today? 今天他会来吗？

－I hope so. (=I hope that he will come today.) 我希望他今天来。

－I hope not.(= I hope that he will not come today.) 我希望他今天不来。（否定从句的谓语）

－I don’t hope that he will come today. 我不希望他今天来。（否定主句的谓语）

上句是不能写成“I don’thope so.”的，在英语国家这样的表达很罕见。总而言之，当谓语动词hope为否定式时，宾语不用so。

另外，be afraid也属同类用法。如：

－ Will the teacher come to our party?老师会来参加我们的派对吗？

－ I’m afraid so.恐怕是的。（so = theteacher will come to our party）

－ I’m afraid not.恐怕不会。（not =the teacher will not come to our party）

如果用I’m not afraid that the teacher will come to our party.“我不怕老师来参加我们的派对”，意义就完全不同了。
