by在这是什么意思？通过...手段还是按照...的意思？这个介词短语做什么状语吗？

the expression 是个名词，它不是主语自己的行为，因此by 肯定不是表示“手段”。

by doing sth. 才是“手段或方式”，而且doing 一定是主语的行为。

这里的by 应为“根据”之意，by the expression on her face 相当于 according to the expression on her face。
