关于过去完成时的句子

They seemed to be too nervous and were too anxious to leave, so I asked whether they wanted to go ahead of me or not. They didn’t understand what I meant/ had meant at first. After knowing it, they were very appreciative. But they stood behind me. 


这个句子是用过去完成时还是一般过去时。


didn't understand 是过去发生的,mean是understand之前的,所以用 had meant,这个理解对吗?

这个句子中应该用一般过去时meant,而不是过去完成时。

仔细想想语境。一开始他们不明白我的意思,指的就是我说前面的话的时候他们不明白,他们不明白和我说话是同时的,并不是在我说话之后,我说话的时候他们就没明白。
