especially 是个“强调副词”，用来加强语气。意为“尤其是；特别是”。它几乎可以修饰各种词类或句中的各种成分，例如：名词、动词、形容词、副词、介词短语、甚至从句。 例如：

1. 强调名词。

I like all kinds of fruits, especially apples.

我喜欢各种水果，尤其是苹果。

【注】此外，还有些副词也可修饰名词，用以加强语气。常用的这类副词有：quite,rather,even, only。如：

We held quite a party last weekend. 上周末我们举行了一次相当不错的聚会。

Even a child won't believe such a story you told. 就连孩子都不会相信你讲的这样一个故事。

Only Tom can solve the problem. 只有汤姆能解决此问题。

2. 强调介词短语。

He likes the country , especially in winter.

他喜欢这个国家，尤其是在冬天的时候。

All colour fades—notably especially the impact of direct sunlight. 

所有颜色都会褪色——尤其是在阳光直射下。

He was disinclined to talk about himself, especially to his students. 

他不喜欢谈论他自己，尤其是当着他学生的面。
