make it a point of sth to do 句式问题

【原文】

So conscious was he that the gentle and timid would turn aside to avoid him, and that others would make it a point of hardihood to throw themselves in his way.

【我的疑问】

这个句式应该是make a point of doing sth，或者接to do用make it a point to do sth，但是point后面不接of sth，it指代to do sth意思是保证做或总是做。这句话到底是保证做to do throw...，还是保证做of sth？原文如果是保证做to do sth，那么是否可以改为make a point of throwing themselves in his way. 但是 of hardihood应该放在句中哪个位置，在句中做什么成分呢？

这是个固定用法，make it a point of/to Do sth 表示对……注意或努力做到…… 例子：

1. Let us make it a point of honour to get in the harvest more quickly than Jones and his men could do.

2. "I make it a point to have something for vegetarians that is hearty, " said Mr. Gonzalez.
