This school has fewer students than Sunshine Middle School.

即使想要考查that的名词替代作用，试题的涉及也应该简洁。例如：

In this school, the number of girls is smaller than           of boys.

number 可以用 big, small, large 修饰。如果前面没有 number,  主语是 The students 后边则应该说 fewer（学生为可数名词）。 That of those = The number of the students, 因为是比较状语从句，所以应该用指代形式。
