on account of为复合介词，相当于because of，后接名词、动名词或动名词复合结构作介词宾语。语法规则是：除了介词in和but, 介词后不可接that从句。但在美国英语非正式语体中，on account of被当作连词使用，后接从句。本句就是这种美式英语的非正式用法。我们可以按照because来理解on account of. 但自己在写作中不宜模仿这种用法。

需要说明的是，这个句子中的on account of引导的从句并不是修饰性状语（adjunct），而是评注性状语（disjunct)。是说话人对自己句子的注释、说明。主句的过去进行时是不久前的事件（比如昨天晚上）。说话人现在说当时（昨晚）自己坐在那里懊恼自己一个字也写不出来（wish表示与事实相反或不可能实现的愿望）。然后作者对自己的句子作注释、说明（disjunct)，解释为什么会希望不可能发生的事情发生：其实已经构思好了一个自认为很不错的间谍故事。在做注释、说明的时候，说话人是以现在为着眼点的（现在和昨晚时间很接近），所以从句用现在完成时have thought up和I think is.

该词典解释了on account of 后接从句的美式非正式用法，却没有解释从句的时态问题。而且该词典的译文有误。“要是现在能够写作多好啊”为翻译错误。wishing是was sitting的伴随状语，是作者当时的愿望而不是现在的愿望。翻译成“现在”显然是受了从句现在时的影响，不过翻译却是错误的。只有用评注性状语或补充性状语才能解释从句用现在时态。
