在这些系动词之后，to be可以省略：

He seems (to be) sad. 他似乎很伤心。

He appears (to be) angry. 他似乎生气了。

The news proved (to be) false. 那消息证明是假的。

The man turned out (to be) a thief. 那人结果是个小偷。

第二个问题：

在in that most tedious of subjects 中，that most tedious 是形容词的最高级，相当于名词或者省略了名词均可，这个名词就是of 后面的名词subject。that 指示代词，特指这个英语学科。例如：

Courage is the most important of all virtues.  勇气是所有美德之首。

It was done with the best of intentions.  是出于一片好心才这样做的。
