这种词我们把它称之为 形容词比较等级修饰词，顾名思义，就是用来说明相比较对象之间的差异程度，属于副词。所以句子中的 far 的作用就是修饰bigger这个词的，以此来说名住房问题对美国就业的流动性的拖累程度很大。

(1) 比较级的修饰语：常见的有 much,even,rather,still,twice,five times,(by)far, far adn away, a lot, a great deal, a little, a bit等。

Japanese is much more difficult than English. 日语比英语难多了。（much修饰比较级more difficult）

She felt a great deal more comfortable now. 她现在感觉舒服多了。（a great deal  修饰比较级 more comfortable）

(2) 最高级的修饰语：常见的有(by) far, much, nearly, almost, not quite, by no means, very, second, next 等。如：

China’s population is by far the largest of any country. 中国是全世界人口最多的国家。

I want to give my children the very best education I can afford. 我想给我孩子力所能及的最良好的教育。

The Yellow River is the second longest river in China. 黄河是中国第二长河流。
