分析或翻译句子之前，首先要能够辨认错误。这个句子结构错误。

tell 作区别讲的时候为单宾语动词，既然tell为被动语态，就不可能在后接名词词组。由此很容易判断 they can't be told one from another是结构错误。

正确结构应该是: They can't be told from one another.

tell A from B：被动结构为：A be told from B

tell the two from each other 被动结构为：they (二个人或事物）be told from each other.

tell the three from one another. 被动结构为：they （三或以上）be told from one another.

美国有很多种族（三个以上），故them指美国的所有不同种族。one another为相互代词，用于三或三以上人或事物。

结构正确了，理解了句义，汉语怎么说通顺就怎么说。比如长得很像的三胞胎兄弟很难区分谁是老大，谁是老二和老三。They can't be told from one another.

tell这里等于distinguish, 固定搭配。不是相互区分，应该是旁人眼光看，看不出其中某一个和另一个的区别。（个人观点）
