这几个介词的意思大同小异，但侧重点有所不同：

1. 介词 on 有两层意思，一是表示“依赖”，二是“在……上”。如：

He had to make a living on a tiny income. 他只好靠微薄的收入勉强维持生活。

He left his office job to try to make a living on the land. 他辞去了办公室的工作，改以务农为生。

2. 介词 by 表示方式。如：

She made a living by selling what she could grow. 她能种什么就卖什么维持生活。

I was told it was impossible to make a living by writing books. 人家告诉我写书谋生是行不通的。

3. 介词 with 表示具体的工具。如：

He hopes to make a living with his pen. 他希望能靠写作为生。

4. at 后面通常接表示工作的职业的名词。如：

He makes a living at tailoring. 他以制衣为生。

He thought he could make a living at painting. 他认为他可以以画画谋生。

注意，如果是后接表示“人”的职业名词，则用介词 as。如：

He makes a living as a tailor. 他以制衣为生。

He thought he could make a living as a painter. 他认为他可以以画画谋生。

5. out of 也表示方式，与 by 用法接近，不如用 by 普通，如：

He made a living out of the sale of fruit. 他靠卖水果谋生。

He makes a living out of writing novels. 他以写小说谋生。
