except 能连接动词吗

老师，为什么 except 能直接连词动词，它后面是否省略了成分？

介词but/except后接不定式时，如果前面有实意动词do出现，其后的不定式的to通常省略。

这一点和不定式作表语时，如果主语部分有实意动词do出现，不定式的to 通常省略。例如：What he did was （to) tell the truth. tell the truth为不带to的不定式。

He did nothing but/except (to) tell the truth.
