单独的later可以表示将来的某个不确定的时间，但three days later这样的结构（即later被时间名词修饰）不能表示从说话时算起的三天后, 只能表示从前文提到的某个过去或将来时间算起的三天后。
例如：I will do it later. （正）
I will do it three days later.（误）
I will do it in three days.（正）
《麦克米伦词典》对later的释义清楚地表明了这一点：
at some time in the future, or after the time that you have been talking about
