网友的这个问题，很有意思。网友的疑问是：trick是名词，定语从句为何不用关系代词that或which，而是用了where？在解答该问题之前，我写了一个用that/which的句子，做一对比：

句1：小狗放在你的书包里上学的这个把戏怎么样？

【分析】

句1 的意思是说：我们要设计一个“把戏”，在这个把戏中，把小狗放在你的书包里跟着上学，咋样？

where 在本句的含义是：在这个把戏中；通过这个把戏。

句2 的意思是说：我们要设计一个“把戏”，这个把戏本身就是让小狗在你的书包里跟着去上学，咋样？

that 在本句的含义是：这个把戏本身。

【网友注意】千万不要认为：定语从句用where 引导，其先行词一定是place 之类的名词。有些不表示地点的名词，也完全可以使用where 引导的定语从句修饰。例如，先行词从“明显地点”到“模糊地点”。例如：situation（情况，情形）, case（情况）, point（地步）, stage（境地）, book（书本）, story（故事）, trick（把戏）, play（戏剧）, film（电影） 等。举例如下：

Can you think of a situation where this idiom can be used? 你能想出一个使用这个成语的情况吗?

I have heard of a case where a soldier riding a bus did not offer his seat to a woman with a baby. 我听说这样一个情况，有个士兵坐车，一位妇女抱着娃娃他不让座。

【第一组】story用作定语从句的主语或宾语，此时关系词用that或which：

He will tell you a story that might make you shiver.

他要给讲一个也许会使你不寒而栗的故事。

A story that completely involved me for the rest of the evening.

一个让我在那天晚上余下的时间完全沉浸其中的故事。

This is a story that happened in 17th century Europe.

这里要讲一个发生在17世纪欧洲的故事。

He tried to act out a story that he had read.

【说明】以上例句中，story后面的定语从句都用了that（which也可），因为关系词在定语从句中作主语（前三句）或者在定语从句中作宾语（最后一句）。

【第二组】story用作定语从句的地点状语，此时关系词用where：

A rags-to-riches story is a story where a very poor person works very hard and, as a result, becomes very rich and successful.

一个白手起家的故事是这样的一个故事，一个很穷的人工作非常努力，因此变得非常富有和成功。

I heard one story where a man had been working as a bonded laborer for 50 years.

我听说过一个故事，一个人干了50年包身工。

Write a short story where the hero is your dad.

写一篇以你父亲为主角的小故事。

I read a story where a yong man died to protect his girlfriend. 我读了一个故事，一个年轻人以死保护他的女朋友。

【说明】以上例句中，story后面的定语从句都用了where，因为关系词在定语从句中作地点状语，或者说，在定语从句中不缺主语或宾语等成分，缺的地点状语。where的含义是：“在这个故事中”。
