off在这是表示使用的介词吗？和with和by有什么区别？

【答】改用with 不合适，因为这里的has 是“吃”的意思，人吃饭用“嘴”吃，不是用“碟子”吃，所以，这属于跟动词搭配不当。使用by 也不合适，by 表示方式，一般接doing。

语言真是“奇怪”，有时候是“正话反说”。

介词off 明明表示“远离某处”，结果却成了“以......为依靠；借助于”（本句的意思便是）。例如：

drive off the batteries

以电池为动力驱动

live off an inheritance

靠遗产生活

They live off the farmland. 他们靠种田过活。

off 的这这层意思是引申出来的。

作为农民的生活，live跟farmland有着“依赖、依存”的密切联系，所以说，“靠种田为生”就顺其自然了。

假设我们改一下句子，说：

They live off the city. 他们住在城外。

则是另外一种理解和意思。他们总不能依靠“城市”去生活吧。所以，翻译成：“他们住在城外”。
