the next largest 和 the second largest 都可表示“第二大的”，其区别是：

1. the second largest 中的序数词明确表示这是“第二”，所以the second largest 的意思是就是“第二大的”，这类表达中的largest 根据情况也可换成其他最高级。如：

Hainan is China’ssecond largest island. 海南是中国第二大岛。

The Yellow River is China’ssecond longest river. 黄河是中国第二大河。

The party is still the second strongest in Italy. 该党仍是意大利的第二大党。

2. the next largest 中的 next 其实是指“其次”，所以 the next largest 的本意是“其次大的”，当然在许多情况下，“其次大的”就是“第二大的”。如：
