这两个句子，结构不同，表意却相同。

第一句：主语是the book，表语部分是difficult to understand。语法书把这种结构分析的很复杂。

其实，我认为，这种结构“adj. + to do”不宜割裂开来分析，而应作为一个整体看待。就是说，形容词后的不定式是必具性的，不可省略。不定式的逻辑宾语就是句子的主语。

第二句：主语是to understand the book，表语是difficult。It自然是“形式主语”。

【注意】It is difficult to understand. 这句话，当及物动词的understand 缺少宾语时，那么it 就是它的逻辑宾语。这时的it 是“人称代词”，指代某本书，而不是形式主语了。

比较：

It is difficult to understand. （It指书）

It is difficult to understand it.（第一个It是形式主语；第二个it指书）
