in surprise和with surprise基本上通用，但in surprise可作表语或状语，而with surprise只作状语。另外，Frederick T· Wood《英语介词习语词典》有如下解释可供参考：

surprise用作名词，表示出其不意地使人吃惊；出其不意地攻击（或捕捉）的意义时，其前用by。例如：

The enemy took us by surprise.敌人偷袭我们。

表示惊奇（或惊讶）地看着某人时，其前用in。例如：

She looked at me in surprise when I suggested that the story might not be true.当我提出说，那故事可能不是真实的，她惊讶地看着我。

表示惊奇（或惊讶）地听到什么或看见什么时，其前可用with。例如：
