【评价】网友这个句子，在more...than...  结构的处理上是可以的，但有一个缺陷。缺陷在于：主、从句的时态都是一般过去时，完全相同，导致比较的时间无法分辨。我们把时态改一下：

More friends will come to his birthday party than did last year.

在than did last year 中，did 的主语由than 兼任，than 的含义相当于many friends， did = came to his birthday。我把这个比较复合句，转换一下说法，就好理解了：

Many friends came to his birthday party last year, and more friends will come to his birthday party (this year).

我觉得，网友的这个句子，语法不错，但不够简练，建议直接改为：

More friends will come to his birthday party than last year. 

总之，网友的句子跟这个句子有异曲同工之妙：

这个句子所涉及的问题其实在我的解答中已经给出了答案。可能内容较多，网友没有理解透。

比较分句不同于其它分句的特点之一，就是在不影响理解的前提下，大量缩减分句成分，分句中有很多省略和替代形式。

就本句而言，than分句的did就是came的替代式。

对于这个than分句，先用Huddleston的CGEL的观点解释，然后再用我的观点解释一遍。

1 than是连词，在比较分句中不作成分。did替代主句中的came，是谓语形式。也就是说分句的连词than之后紧接谓语动词，从句缺少主语。其它成分不缺。换句话说，这个比较分句省略了主语而保留了谓语动词。语法允许省略分句的主语而保留谓语吗？根据Huddleston的观点，只有二种情况允许省略主语而保留谓语动词：

我们再看分句的逻辑，did替代的是came to the party, 即某人去年参加他的生日派对，从逻辑分析可知，分句的主语是主句比较项more friends的对应项，必须省略，不允许还原的。这个句子是一个规范、标准的比较分句。

2 现在用我的观点解释：

than是个比较代词，替代主句比较项中的名词friends，该名词还需限制定语修饰，由此主句的friends和分句的friends进行比较。即than=compared with the friends that. than包含了三层意义，引导比较分句表示比较意义、替代比较项、隐含关系代词（这个关系代词要在分句中作成分）。这三层意义集于than，因此than就要在分句中作成分了。

than主语 did谓语（=came to his birthday party) last year时间状语.

分句分析可知，than作分句的主语，分句不缺少任何成分，是完整的结构。因此不需要添加任何多余成分。
