时态、间接引语问题

—Why did you call yesterday? I was out then.

—To tell you I ____ a souvenir for you.

The two choices confuse me quite a bit. I'm wondering which sounds better to you?

答语只用了不定式 to tell...，具有迷惑性。补充完整后，就明白选哪一个了：

I called to tell you I had bought a souvenir for you.

应选择 had bought，说明“买纪念品”早于“打电话”。否则，如果选bought，到底是“准备要买”还是“已经买了”？势必造成歧义。
