这个可能得从there和here的的用法说起。here为近指副词，意为to or in this place。there为远指副词，意为to or in that place one has just mentioned。当表示静止意义是，二者都含有in的意义在内，通常不需要加介词in。其隐含的to使得表示朝向或到达目的地的移动不需要。如come here，不说come to here. go there不说go to there. 说stand here/there不说stand in here/there。但要表示来源地，出发地，就需要介词from. 因为here和there的词义中不含离开某地或从某处朝向其它方向的意思，需要借助介词from才能表达相应的意义。如Where do you come from?而不是Where do you come？
提问中的句子，我们先把它还原成并列句进行分析。

from是个比较特殊的介词，在表示具体地点的时候，表示“从某个地方”，介词 from 后面还要接介词短语来吧地点描述准确。比如吧，“从门后面”不能说 from the door，而是 from behind the door；“从床底下”是 from under the bed 而不是 from the bed.
与之呼应，如果where引导定语从句时前面有介词from，那么我们就应该用from where。不妨比较这两个句子：
I stood before the desk, in which Henry hid some story books. 我站在这张桌子前。亨利在桌子里面藏了几本小说。
I stood before the desk, from where I could have a good view of the garden. 我站在桌子前。从这里能看到花园的全景。
