答案C. 请问这里 it 能否用 this 替换？this 指代上一句话不可以吗？还有后面的句子里 because he had to be 这里的 to be 是省略了什么呢？为什么不是 he had to?

这里显然是指代前面的give up his drawing。这种后照应用it和this都可以,但由于后面紧接that，this和that连起来读不通顺，因此用it。

末尾的be是错误的。必须删去。

这个句子肯定是某个中国老师自己编的。前面已经说了He had to give up..., 后面的not because...but because...纯属废话。

两个代词都可以,但是代替同类同物，最好使用it
