part of 与a part of在用法上是不一样的。费致德的《现代英语惯用法词典》对这个问题作了较详细的说明：

1. part of指“一部分”时的意思比较含糊，它可能是整体的一半以上或一半以下；而a part of的意思是“一小部分”(only a small part of)，指的是整体的一半以下。如：

Part of the land is devoted to agriculture. 部分土地用于农业。《现代英语惯用法词典》

A part of the text-books have arrived. 一小部分教科书已经运到。《现代英语惯用法词典》

2. 英语 many parts of 的说法是很常见的。如：

Colonists from Europe populated many parts of the Americas. 欧洲的殖民者移居到了美洲的许多地方。《简明英汉词典》

3. 如果表示“大部分”，就不要用many parts of。the great part是一半以上，the better part是较多或较大的部分，the best part是最大(多)的部分。例如：

The great part of the highway is already completed. 这条公路的大部分已经完成。

We walked the better part of the way. 大部分路程我们是徒步走过的。

For the best part of the summer vocation I stayed in Wuhan. 这个暑假的绝大部分时间我都在武汉呆着。
