这个句子有两种理解方法：

1 逗号之前部分为省略了 that 的宾语从句前置，finds 是谓语，new research...为主语。

2 逗号之前是并列句（主要信息），逗号后是插入语，补充说明。逗号后是倒装的主语加谓语。起的作用相当于评注性状语。

finds...倒装句是说话人为but后的这句话提供的补充依据。finds 倒装可以看作类似于直接引语的倒装。如 "Hurry up!" said Dad.当然问题句的后半句也可以写为but new research from the University of Toronto and the University of California finds that they regularly lie to their children as a way of influencing their behavior and emotions.
