你的句子怎么能够全部用一般现在时态呢？原句应改为：

I am late because I have missed the bus.

I was late because I had missed the bus.

在特殊语境下，如你必须乘坐末班车去某处，但你到车站的时候末班车已经开走了。你就可以说;

I was late and missed the bus.So I couldn't...(没必要重复I）（暗示未能去某处)

I was late, so I missed the bus. so表示结果。你错过了公交车，不言而喻你肯定迟了，不可能早，任何有逻辑常识的人都会明白。因此I was late属于说废话。老师在改作文时肯定会删去的。

注意时态的应用！！！

这两句话在表示结果的情况下是成立的，但应用过去时。即：

（1）I was late and I missed the bus.

（2）I was late so I missed the bus.

句（1）和句（2）的意思基本相同，都可以译为：“我迟到了，所以没赶上公共汽车”。and可以表示结果，相当于so。又如：

My flight was late and I missed the connection. 航班晚点，我没赶上转机。《柯林斯高阶英汉双解学习词典》
