half of the cake 的意思是“半块蛋糕”，half of the money的意思是“一半的钱”，half of our income意思是“我们收入中的一半”，half of the apple 意思是“半个苹果”，等等。
但是，half of him总不能理解成“他的一半”吧？（难道指“半个人”？）但就你的句子来说，其中的half of him可以理解为“他有一半的心思（或想法）”。句子大意为：Half of him wanted to marry the girl who was much richer and muchmore famous than him. 他半想半不想跟这个比他富有得多同时也名气大得多的女孩结婚。（相当于Partly he wanted to, but partly he didn’t.）
