今年是鸡年，人们将鸡年翻译成 the year of the rooster，但为什么不翻译成 the year of the cock 呢？另外，汉语中的12生肖，在英语翻译中，到底如何选用动物名称呢？请老师指点！

其实将鸡年翻译成the year of the cock 也不是不可以。有人对此针对五本英语词典进行了统计，其中就有使用the year of the cock的:

赞同蒋老师引用一些字典的说法，我就此问题再做些补充。

1.鸡年一般通行的译法为的the Year of the Rooster. 现代英语实践中，很少有人用cock, 尽管也有这种用法。人们刻意回避这个词，因为cock容易使人联想的到色情。但有人用the Year of the Cockerel.

2.12生肖中的动物，有时可以有不同的说法。除了蒋老师列举的一些字典中的用法外，还有the Year of the Bull, the Year of the Goat，the Year of the Ram, the Year of the Boar 等说法。
