表示“想要或希望某人做某事”，可以用 want sb. to do sth. 或者 want sb. doing sth.句型。但是，最好注意：（1）want sb. to do sth. 句型的例句在词典中很容易找到，这里就不举例了，在考试中，最好用这种句型。（2）want sb. doing sth.句型中的doing 是现在分词，不是动名词。这种句型中的want多用否定式，但是也可以用肯定式。因为很多词典没有提供例句，所以，容易被判为错误，所以，在考试中最好不用。以下例句均出自英语原著，转引自张道真主编的《现代英语用法词典》修订版：I don't want women medding in my affairs. (ALD)/ Perhaps you wouldn't want an old man like me interfering in your affairs.(Walpole)/ We don't want you getting into trouble.(Mis) / Who wants you thinking about me? (Mis)/ I don't want people playing the piano at all hours of the day and night.(DCE)

(3)want sb/sth to do sth/to be done

That child wants a nurse to look after him.

The manager wants you to think it over.

She wants Mary to go with her.   
她希望玛丽和她一道去。

(4)want sb/sth +形容词/副词

I want the letter ready by tomorrow.   
我要明天就准备好这封信。

I want it back right now.   
我要别人立刻把它还给我。

Are you sure you want me back?   
你确实想让我回来吗?

(5) want sb/sth +介词短语

This child wants you out of the room.   
这孩子要你到外面去。

The teacher wants you in the classroom.   
老师要你去教室。

I wanted it answered how the picture was drawn.   
我想就这幅画是如何绘画的得到一个回答。

I don't want the child left alone.   
我不希望把这孩子单独留下。

He wants his sprained ankle carefully treated.   
他要叫人把他扭伤的足踝细心地医治。

（备注1；当需要，愿意时，也可以接动名词want sb doing sth）

I do not want you answering the question.   
我不需要你回答这个问题。

Of course he wouldn't want others interfering in his affairs.   
他当然不会愿意别人干涉他的事。

（备注2：want 后面接动名词一般表示被动含义,(want/need/require/deserve用法一样，即接动名词表示被动含义。）
