延续性动词用于一般现在时通常不宜与表示一段时间的状语连用。英语一般不会说：I live here for a long time.（但可说：I have lived here for a long time. / I can live here for a long time./ I will live here for a long time. / I hope to live here for a long time. 等等）

不过在某些特殊种情况下，延续性动词的一般现在时也可能与表示一段时间的状语连用。比如以下两种情况：

一是用于某些状语从句表示将来意义的一般现在时可以这样用（如果意允许的话）。如：

If you work with him for some time, you will find him veryinteresting. 你若同他共事一段时，你会发现他很有趣。

If you live here for some time, you will find this place verywonderful to live. 你若在这里住一段时间，你会发现这个地方很适合居住。

二是用于笼统地或泛泛地谈论某情况。如：

If one personfeuds with another, they have a quarrel that lasts a long time. 如果一个人与另一个人长期结怨，那他们就会长时间地有争吵。

If youconserve a supply of something, you use it carefully so that it lasts for along time. 你若节约着用某东西，那就是你会小心地用它，以便让它用很长时间。

Somethingthat is durable is strong and lasts a long time without breaking or becomingweaker. 耐用的东西会很坚固，可以用很长时间而不折断或变脆弱。
