would 和 should 用法

He burned all the important documents for fear that they should fall into the enemy's hands.为什么此处不能用 would fall 呢？

for fear that 的意思是“因为害怕”、“生怕”、“以免”，后面的从句中用should 或者would 都是正确的。例如：She worried for fear (that) the child would be hurt . 她怕那孩子受伤而忧心忡忡。（《薄冰英语惯用法词典》p.300）He handled the instrument with care for fear (that) it should be damaged .他小心翼翼地使用那台仪器，生怕把它弄坏。（《新英汉词典》）
