比较B和D，再结合句意，我认为 D 更佳。因为比较而言，keep 含有主观努力的意味，而 remain 则主要表示客观上依然如此（虽然有时也表示主观努力）。而就本题来说，显然句子主语the difficult physics problem 不含“主观努力”的因素，故 D 更佳。

同样地，下面的句子也不宜将 remain 改为 keep：

Let things remain as they are. 一切保持现状吧。

I was expecting another of his acid remarks, but he remained silent. 我等着他再说一句刻薄的话，但他不吭声了。

但下面句子中的 remain 则可以换成 keep：

We can’t assume the suspects to be guilty simply because they’ve decided to remain silent. 我们不能仅仅因为疑犯保持沉默就断定他们有罪。
