1. 美国英语中有时允许 can not 分写，cannot 在正式文体中似较 can not 通用。英国英语中却往往要连写为一个词 cannot。  2. can not 分写为两个词，有时属于强调用法。例如：
You ask if you can go out? No, you certainly can not! 你问你是否可以出去？不行，绝对不行！      
3. 有时，在一个句子中，用 cannot 与用 can not 会形成截然不同的意思。例如：
You cannot (或 can't) stay here; you must go. 你不许留在此处，你必须走开。（此句中，被否定的词为can，若在口语中，cannot 可紧缩为can't）
这种句子中的can用来代替的是正式的may，表示“许可”，否定式cannot（或 can't）用来表示“禁止”。又如：
You can not stay here; you may go if you want to. 你可以不留在此处，如果你想走的话，你就可以走。（此句中，被否定的是实义动词stay，在口语中，此处的can  not 不能缩为can't 形式）
4. 在含有 not only ... but also 结构的句子中，not only 之前若出现 can，这个 can 绝对不能与其后的 not 连写成一个词，更不能用其紧缩形式 can't 去替换。例如：
Family life can not only give security, but also provide children with values and standards with which to face the world. 家庭生活不仅能保障儿童们的安全，而且还能使他们懂得走向社会所需要的准则和规范。
