less可以修饰复数名词吗

老师上课时说 less 是 little 的比较级，所以只能修饰不可数名词，不能修饰可数名词；若要修饰可数名词，要用 fewer 之类的。但是，我在英语语法网上看到这样一个句子：

There have been less accidents on this road since the speed limit was introduced. 自从实施速度限制后，这条路上的交通事故已经少些了。

请问这里的 less 修饰 accidents 有问题吗？是不是应该改为 fewer accidents 呢？

less确实是little的比较急，基本意思是“较少的、更少的”，这时注意它的词性是形容词。

1.less多用来修饰不可数名词，但是当名词前有数次或a few等修饰词时，其后可接可数名词：

The firm has less money and fewer staff than last year. 公司的资金和人员都比去年少了。

If you don’t want to get fat, eat less food. 你如果不想长胖，就少吃点食物。

We could do with a few more workers and a few less supervisors. 我们可以再增加几个工人，减少几个监工。

2.在把时间、距离、金钱等短语看做是一个整体时，less可用来修饰可数名词：

We got there in less than four hours. 我们用了不到四个小时的时间就到那里了。

3.在有些短语中，说话人着眼于有关事物大约的量，而不去细算精确的数额是，less也可用来修饰可数名词；

Less people study Latin today than before. 现在学拉丁语的人比以前少。

4.用在感叹句中，less后可接可数名词。

If only there were less holes! 要是窟窿少些该多好啊！

与than连用的时候，用less修饰可数名词复数是很普遍的用法。单独修饰名词时，在正式用语中，更常见的是用fewer修饰可数名词复数，less修饰不可数名词。
