▲first time的用法

first time 的意思是“第一次”，可以视为 the first time 省略冠词的用法。如：

She guessed the answer first time. 她第一次就猜中了答案。

I’m not really expecting to pass first time. 我真不指望第一次就能合格。

注：这类用法加上定冠词也是可以的。即：

She guessed the answer the first time. 她第一次就猜中了答案。

I’m not really expecting to pass the first time. 我真不指望第一次就能合格。

▲a first time的用法

a first time 的说法很少见，但有一个句式值得注意：

there’s a first time for everything  过去没发生的事并不意味着将来就不会发生；凡事都有第一次：

There has (got) to be a first time for everything. 做任何事都有个第一次。

“The flood water has never reached the house before.” “Well, there’s a first time for everything.”  “以前洪水从没涨到这座房子这儿。”“呃，什么事情都有个第一次嘛。”

1. 用作状语，表示第一次（这样用时 the 有时可以省略）。如：

If you don’t succeed the first time, try again. 如果第一次没有成功，就再试一试。

A lot of people fail their driving test the first time. 许多人首次参加驾驶执照考试都通不过。

2. 用作连词，引导时间状语从句（这样用时 the 通常不可以省略）。如：

I was fitter the first time I did the climb. 第一次攀登的时候我身体较健康。

My girlfriend beat me at poker the first time we played. 我头一次和女朋友打扑克，她就把我赢了。

The first time he visited New Orleans he knew he had found his spiritual home. 第一次踏上新奥尔良的土地，他就意识到自己找到了精神家园。

3. 用作名词，在句中用作主语或宾语等（这样用时 the 通常不可以省略）。如：

I want you to cast your minds back to the first time you met. 我要你们回忆初次见面的情景。

I can remember the first time I went sailing—it was a wonderful sensation. 我还记得第一次航海的时候——那种感觉真是太棒了。

The first time you dive on a coral reef is an experience you will never forget. 第一次在珊瑚礁潜水是毕生难忘的经历。

另外，注意常用表达 for the first time（这样用时 the 通常不可以省略）。如：

The Bears took the lead for the first time this season. 本赛季熊队首次领先。

I tried my hand at water-skiing for the first time. 我第一次尝试了滑水。

For the first time in years she had someone she could rely on. 多年来她这是第一次有可以信任的人了。

还有it is / was the first time…句式（这样用时 the 通常不可以省略）：

It is the first time I’ve seen you wearing a dress. 这是我第一次看到你穿一件连衣裙。（注意从句用现在完成时）
