前面提问过关于 first place 的问题，但还是有几个疑问：

1. 除了 in the first place 之外，first place 表示第一名时，在任何时候是否都不能加 the 吗？first prize 前面可以不加 the 吗？

【答】表示顺序意义的in the first place（首先），跟表示名次意义的first place，按说都应该在序数词first之前加定冠词the，但后者可以省略，这是有原因的。

在体育和其他比赛中，表示名次的place 和prize，可以省略the（注意“可以”二字，不是必须省略）。至于为何省略，我猜测，在比赛解说过程中，口语的特点是简练，解说员来不及说那些无关紧要的虚词了（如冠词），干脆直接说：win first place, get first prize。由此，演变为在新闻、广播和其他书面语也跟着省略。

2. 请问 place 表示“名次”时，in+序数词+place节除做状语是否能做表语？

【答】in the first/second place，表示顺序，意为“首先/其次”，可以作状语；也可以用在be 后作表语，作表语的意思是：“处在第一的位置/第二的位置”。请比较：

1. He is a teacher in the first place and a writer in the second place. 

他首先是一个教师，其次才是一个作家。（作状语）

2. I do not know how somebody who is in second place is offering the vice presidency to the person who is in first place. （作表语）

我不理解一个屈居第二的参选人，居然提出让一个名列前茅的人作她的副总统竞选伙伴。
