clue 和 lead 两者都有“线索”的意思，请问区别如何？

▲两者均可表示解决问题的“线索”，常可互换（但clue属常用词）。如：
The police are following up all the clues / leads. 警方正沿着所有线索继续追查。
The police are investigating an important new clue / lead. 警方正在调查一条重要的新线索。
detectives investigating the murder are chasing new clues / leads. 调查该谋杀案的侦探正在搜索新线索。
▲但是注意，clue 与 lead 在表示“线索”时，两者在搭配上有些不同：如表示“……的线索”，clue通常搭配介词 to, as to 以及 about，而 lead 则通常搭配介词 on。如：
The hat gives a clue to the identity of the killer. 那顶帽子提供了辨认杀人犯的线索。
This research might provide an important clue about how cancer develops. 这项研究可能提供关于癌症成因的重要线索。
So far, the police haven’t got any clues as to the motive for the crime. 目前警方还未掌握任何犯罪动机的线索。
My friend gave me a lead on a new job opening. 我的朋友向我提供了一条有关新的职位空缺的线索。
▲顺便说一顺，表示纵横填字字谜的“提示”“线索”时，通常要用clue。如：
