the other day 的意思是“几天前”（=a few days ago），从它所表示含义上看，它应该与过去时态连用。如：

A funny thing happened to me the other day. 那天我碰上了一件怪事。

I heard a good joke the other day. 几天前我听到个有趣的笑话。

I saw him in town the other day. 我最近有一天在伦敦见过他。

但如果 the other day 不是修饰谓语动词，则不一定连用过去时态。如：

The man speaking to us the other day has gone to Japan. 那天同我们讲话的那个人到日本去了。(句中的speaking等于who spoke)

Your help the other day is very important for us. 你前几天提供的帮助对我们非常重要。（Your help the other day=The help you offered the other day）

I’m awfully sorry about that problem the other day. 我对前几天的那个问题感到非常遗憾。（that problem the other day=the problem we caused the other day）
