the more, the more 比较结构通常称为关联比较结构correlative comparative construction. 这种比较有二种句式，一种是从句在前，主句在后；一种是主句在前，从句在后。例如：
The more you eat, the fatter you will get. 从句在前，主句在后。这种句式更为常见。
You will get fatter the more you eat. 主句在前，从句在后。此时主句的比较级通常不用the。剑桥语法称这种句式为basic version。
当主句在前时，主句可以没有比较级，而代之以表示增加或减少意义的动词如increase。对此剑桥语法在1136页的附注中说明：
The basic version marginally allows a verb such as increase instead of a syntactic comparative:
The violence increases the more sanctions bite.
