一、建议不要将 born to 换成 born in

有人可能认为可以将 born to 换成 born in，因为你可以在某些词典中查到类似的用法。但我们建议不要将 born to 换成 born in，因为也有的词典认为这类用法中的 born to 不能换成 born in。比如Longman Dictionary of Common Errors就认为born in…family是错的：

× He was born in a Catholic family.

√ He was born into a Catholic family.

该书给出的解释是：be born into a particular type of family, world, etc (NOT in)。虽然这里给出的“√ ”句用的是介词 into，其实换成 to 也是可以的。 

二、关于 born to 与 born in 的用法区别

(1) born in：这里的 in 主要用于字面意义——in 与 born 关系并不密切，而是与它后面搭配的名词关系密切（比如表示时间、地点、状态等）。如：

Her son Sean was born in 1983. 她的儿子肖恩出生于1983年。

She was born in the latter half of the eighteenth century. 她生于18世纪后半叶。

He was born in a foreign country and had never been naturalized. 他出生于国外，从未被接受入籍。

All persons born in the United States are citizens of the United States. 出生在美国的人都是美国公民。

Some are born in slavery, others born merely poor. 一些人出身于奴隶，另一些人只是出身于贫苦家庭。

(2) born to：这里的 born to可看作是惯用搭配，意思是“为……所生”，其后通常接“人”，此时也可用 born of。如：

He was born of / to German parents. 他的生身父母是德国人。

a multiple birth (= several babies born to a mother at six time) 多胎产

born to a father and mother who are not married私生的；非婚生的

babies who are born to very young mothers 非常年轻的妈妈生的孩子

虽然我们通常将 family 理解为“家庭”，但它其实是侧重指“家庭成员”，即本质上仍是指“人”，所以它前面也可用介词 to（当然更常用的是 into 或 of）：

He was born into / to / of a poor family. 他出身低微。

He was born into / to / of an aristocratic family. 他出身高贵。
