这个句子由表语afraid可知主语应该是the turtles。后面的句子They trembled. They shook. 也可以证明感到害怕的是turtles。所以这个句子中的属格撇号是传抄中的笔误，应该删去。way在此是副词，修饰down。way down in the pond整体是turtles的定语。
