你的理解是错的，你提到的解释是对的。
你把它理解成“as后跟现在分词作时间状语”，最起码的一点是，意思不通，这样用的 as 你把它看成“时间”，你如何理解，如何翻译？你把它理解成“当……的时候”？无论如何这样的理解都说不通。
而把它理解成“as加动名词短语作方式状语”，那就很正常，意思是“以曾经借出过这样或那样的书的方式”被记录下来。
