你先看一下下面这个句子：
What they had been able to do only part-time was (to) grow rice for the marketplace.
你可能知道，当主语部分含有实意动词do时，作表语的不定式的to是可以省略的，而且省略比不省略更为常见。这种表语为确认性表语，即主语=表语。这样你就可以理解二者具有同位关系。你的句子中的grow rice for the marketplace其实就是一个不定式短语作what从句的同位语，省略了不定式符号to。加上to也是可以的。
